Taking an ethical stand

Taking an ethical stand

Coffee that doesn't cost the earth

Here at Quokka Coffee we've been thinking about how we can improve our environmental impact and how to take action without having a big impact on our daily routine but a big impact on saving our planet especially if we can all club together to do the same small steps. So hear us out...
This is our only earth, so why be disposable, why not think about what we throw in the bin after every meal, drink or snack. Why not change our mindset of accepting that's just the way it is, and the packaging that our products are provided in are just they way they are. We are dominated by large companies that control the markets. But why...
We have choices, and we need to choose the companies that are ethical and doing their bit to save the planet! I know that sounds like something out of a super hero film but its the reality we are facing today. Not only will these small changes add up especially when more and more people think green but they will probably help a smaller independent business make a living and fuel their passion.
Become more ethical
Being ethical has become a major plus point for companies, not only does it look attractive to people wanting to do business with them, it's also a topic of conversation. You've probably heard on the radio or television, "a major supermarket is the first to provide paper bags when selecting fruit and veg to replace plastic bags" they've got the media attention, which makes people talk and acknowledge them.
Lets jump on the band wagon! Use it as a marketing tool, it not only reflects well on your company but in turn benefits the planet by raising awareness of the simple steps that can be taken to improve yours and anyone reading or listening to improve their carbon footprint. Win Win.
If your business can't provide anything ethical, that doesn't mean it can't become ethical. It can make ethical choices when it comes to vehicles, coffee provider, milk delivery, waste disposal, even down to stationary.
'Bags for Life' are a hot topic, they have been embraced by all major shops. However, have we the public embraced them too much. They are made to be more sturdy and last longer, but who is guilty of realising they forgot their bags for life when they get to the check out, probably most of us. We then buy another bag because whats 30p going to add to the final amount, not much. Bags for life have become just as disposable as the free plastic bags we used to use but more damaging to the environment because they are made from more plastic to be more heavy duty - they are now known as "bag for a week"
How do we get out of this trend?
Lets start with materials that can be recycled, for example brown paper bags or boxes. They come in all shapes and sizes, and yes they may not be the best in the rain when running to the car, but that's the point, they are biodegradable and recyclable which is what the planet needs more of.
Ever heard of bees wax baking paper? Neither had we until we went looking for ways to make simple changes to daily habits. Bees wax baking paper is the planet friendly more sustainable alternative to tin foil and cling film. Be honest, how many times do you use tin foil a week when cooking, then put it in the recyclable waste after one maybe two uses. Or cover the left over pasta with cling fling ready to re heat the next day. Bees Wax paper is just one example of an easy alternative that can be used again and again within your everyday or weekly routines. Even better the paper is natural and biodegradable.
Germany's government has taken action against plastic coffee pods, and banned plastic pods in various cities due to the high amount of wasted plastic. Lets put it into context, one office with 30 workers that have roughly 15 coffee drinkers, having approximately two coffee pods a day. That's 30 pods daily, 150 in a working week and 7,800 plastic pods a year, all going in the bin. It soon adds up! Those sums are based on a small office of coffee drinkers only having two cups a day, most will probably drink more than two a day, and big cities are not short of big offices. The impact is massive.

There are so many campaigners out there today fighting the plastic battle and providing alternatives that we are confident you can find a more sustainable alternative for almost anything, including coffee deliveries!
